At 19,336 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest walkable mountain. While no prior climbing experience is required to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, it can prove to be a very challenging hike to the unfit and should not be underestimated.
Being in good physical condition is one way of safeguarding a successful and enjoyable ascent to the summit. The first recommendation to Kilimanjaro trekkers is to consult their physician prior to attempting the climb. This will give an good indication of your body’s ability to make it through the climb. While one may not need to be an athlete to reach the summit, climbers are advised to undertake cardiovascular training and conditioning in preparation for the trek 8 to 12 weeks before the climb. At a minimum, climbers should be comfortable walking 4-8 hours per day. Trekkers are strongly advised to consult their physician’s prior to beginning any fitness regimen.
In addition, small changes taking the stairs instead of the elevator, taking the dog on longer walks, and choosing the farthest parking spot in the lost will go a long way in helping to prepare for the hike.
